Noida Journalist Targeted in Brazen Scooter Attack
A journalist in Noida narrowly escaped harm after two men on a scooter chased his car and shattered the rear window in Sector 110 on Tuesday evening. The attackers fled, but one suspect, Rakesh Kumar, was later arrested while his accomplice remains at large.
Eyewitness Account: The Harrowing Chase
The victim, Amit Sharma (name changed), a senior digital journalist, was returning home around 8:30 PM when a white scooter began aggressively tailing him near Sector 110.
“They banged on my window before smashing it with a blunt object,” Sharma recalled. “I sped away, but they chased me for nearly a kilometer before I lost them in traffic.”
Police Action & Ongoing Investigation
An FIR was filed under IPC Sections 427 (mischief) and 506 (criminal intimidation). Noida SP Vineet Jaiswal stated:
“The motive is unclear—we’re probing personal enmity, road rage, and professional links.”
CCTV footage led to Kumar’s arrest, but his accomplice’s identity remains unknown.
Press Freedom Concerns Rise
Media unions and the Editors Guild of India condemned the attack, linking it to Sharma’s recent investigative work on land grabbing in UP. Colleagues revealed he’d received threats days prior.
Priyanka Dubey, Journalist & Activist:
“Attacking reporters silences democracy. Authorities must act.”
Political Reactions
- Rahul Gandhi (Congress): Called it “authoritarianism.”
- Sambit Patra (BJP): Promised “strict action.”
Next Steps
Sharma now has police protection, and Noida Police vow increased patrolling. The case highlights India’s declining press safety rankings.
