CPI(M) Condemns Tripura Govt’s Rally Ban, Diverges from Congress
In a rare split, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has openly criticized the BJP-led Tripura government for denying permission to Tipra Motha’s youth wing rally on November 7. The event, planned to honor tribal icon Birsa Munda and demand autonomy, was barred citing “law and order concerns”—a move the CPI(M) calls “undemocratic.”
The Left party’s stance marks a sharp departure from ally Congress, which has stayed silent, exposing cracks in the opposition INDIA bloc ahead of tribal council elections.
Why Was Tipra Motha’s Rally Blocked?
The Tipra Motha, a key regional party pushing for “Greater Tipraland,” aimed to mobilize tribal youth in Agartala on Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary. The state government, however, refused clearance, with Home Minister Amit Chakraborty claiming risks to “public peace.”
Critics accuse the BJP of suppressing dissent, especially after Tipra Motha’s rising influence in tribal belts. CPI(M) leader Jitendra Chaudhury countered, “BJP fears tribal unity—this is an assault on democratic rights.”
Congress’s Silence Sparks Alliance Tensions
While the CPI(M) rallied behind Tipra Motha, Congress avoided direct criticism. Analysts suggest Congress hesitates due to Tipra Motha’s unpredictable alliances—it has previously engaged with both BJP and opposition.
A Congress insider admitted anonymously, “We can’t blindly back Tipra Motha when their loyalties are unclear.” This caution has strained relations with CPI(M), which prioritizes tribal rights as a core electoral issue.
BJP’s Tribal Gambit vs Opposition Infighting
The BJP defended its decision, with state chief Rajib Bhattacharjee alleging “forces inciting unrest.” The party has simultaneously co-opted tribal demands while marginalizing Tipra Motha politically.
For the INDIA bloc, the CPI(M)-Congress divide complicates efforts to challenge BJP dominance. With Tipra Motha threatening legal action, Pradyot Debbarma declared, “Our fight won’t stop.”
What’s Next for Tripura’s Political Battle?
As tribal politics intensifies, the CPI(M)’s defiance may push Congress to clarify its stance. However, BJP’s grip remains strong, and opposition unity hangs in balance.
