Bodies of Three NIT Silchar Students Recovered from Waterfall in Assam’s Dima Hasao
In a devastating incident, the bodies of three National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar students were recovered from a waterfall in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Tuesday. The victims—Aniket Das, Siddhant Sharma, and Ritwik Roy—were part of a trekking group visiting the Haflong Hill area when the tragedy occurred.
The Fatal Trek to Umrangso Waterfall
The students had embarked on a weekend trip to explore Dima Hasao, a region famous for its scenic waterfalls and lush greenery. They reportedly visited Umrangso waterfall, a popular but hazardous tourist spot known for its strong currents and slippery rocks.
Eyewitnesses claim the trio ventured too close to the waterfall’s edge, possibly for a photo, when they lost their footing and fell into the raging waters. Despite immediate rescue attempts by locals and fellow trekkers, the forceful currents and rocky terrain delayed recovery efforts.
Search and Rescue Operation
Authorities, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, launched a large-scale search operation. After hours of challenging efforts, the bodies of all three students were recovered.
Rajib Saikia, Dima Hasao SP, stated, “The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and an investigation is ongoing. We advise tourists to avoid risky areas, especially during monsoon.”
NIT Silchar Mourns the Loss
The news sent shockwaves across the NIT Silchar campus, prompting the institute to declare a day of mourning. Counseling services were arranged for grieving students.
