Bengaluru Citizens Rally Against Twin Tunnel Project in Lalbagh
Bengaluru, known as India’s “Garden City,” saw a flash protest at Lalbagh Botanical Garden on Tuesday as environmentalists, activists, and residents opposed the proposed twin tunnel project linking Hebbal and Silk Board. Over 200 demonstrators demanded the project’s cancellation, warning of irreversible harm to the city’s green heritage.
Why Is the Twin Tunnel Project Controversial?
The Karnataka government’s ₹5,000 crore twin tunnel project aims to ease Bengaluru’s traffic by creating a 17-kilometer underground route. Officials claim it will reduce congestion, but critics argue it threatens Lalbagh’s fragile ecosystem, home to ancient trees, rare plants, and migratory birds.
Protesters carried signs like “Save Lalbagh, Save Bengaluru” and accused authorities of ignoring ecological risks. “Tunneling will disrupt groundwater and destroy tree roots,” said Dr. Priya Rao, a botanist leading the protest.
Environmental and Community Concerns
Activists dispute the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), calling it inadequate. “The EIA ignores long-term soil erosion and vibration damage,” said environmentalist Vikram Shetty. Residents also fear noise, pollution, and prolonged construction.
“The government should improve public transport instead of harming green spaces,” said Jayanagar resident Ramesh N.
Government’s Response and Alternatives
BDA officials assured that tunnels would avoid Lalbagh’s core areas, but protestors remain unconvinced, citing past tree loss from metro projects. Urban planners suggest alternatives like suburban rail expansion or optimizing the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR).
Political Reactions and Public Backlash
Opposition leaders, including KPCC chief DK Shivakumar, demand public consultations, while ruling BJP leaders insist on balancing development and environment. Protesters plan legal action, with an online petition already reaching 15,000 signatures.
What’s Next for the Project?
With growing opposition, the government may reconsider the project’s design. The #SaveLalbagh movement continues to gain momentum, highlighting Bengaluru’s struggle between growth and sustainability.
