Tensions Flare in Manipur as Displaced Protesters Clash with Police Over Sangai Festival
Imphal, November 22: Violent clashes erupted in Manipur’s capital, Imphal, after displaced residents protested against the state government’s decision to proceed with the Sangai Festival. Police and demonstrators clashed, resulting in injuries on both sides.
The annual cultural festival, which celebrates Manipur’s heritage and tourism, has faced backlash due to ongoing ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Thousands displaced since May 2023 remain in relief camps, calling the event “insensitive.”
Why Are Protesters Opposing the Sangai Festival?
Displaced Kuki-Zo tribes argue that hosting a grand festival while 60,000+ people remain homeless ignores their suffering. Since ethnic clashes began, over 180 have died, and many still fear returning home.
“How can the government spend crores on celebrations when our people are starving?” said an anonymous protester.
Police Clash with Protesters, Tear Gas Fired
A peaceful rally near Hapta Kangjeibung turned violent when police blocked protesters. Stone-pelting led to tear gas and baton charges, injuring at least six officers and several demonstrators. Authorities later imposed Section 144 to curb unrest.
Government Defends Festival Amid Criticism
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s government insists the festival is key to restoring normalcy and boosting tourism. Officials claim canceling it would harm Manipur’s economy and image.
“The Sangai Festival showcases Manipur’s resilience,” a spokesperson said.
Political Backlash & Public Divide
Opposition leaders and tribal groups, including the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), accuse the government of neglecting relief efforts. Public opinion remains split—some see the festival as morale-boosting, while others demand resettlement before celebrations.
What’s Next for Manipur?
With tensions high, Manipur faces a tough choice between cultural promotion and crisis resolution. Today’s clashes underscore the fragile peace, raising concerns about further unrest.
