Shivakumar Acknowledges Contractors’ Struggles Amid Payment Delays
In a press conference held in Bengaluru on Tuesday, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed empathy for contractors facing financial hardships due to delayed payments. He highlighted the plight of small and medium-sized contractors who have invested heavily in government projects but are struggling with bureaucratic delays.
“I understand the pain of contractors. Many of them have invested their time, money, and effort into government projects. Delays in payments can cripple their businesses, and we are working to resolve these issues,” Shivakumar stated.
Firm Stance Against Threats and Intimidation
While acknowledging the challenges faced by contractors, Shivakumar made it clear that the government would not tolerate any form of intimidation or threats. “No one can threaten the government or hold it hostage. We are here to serve the people, and we will ensure that all projects are completed on time and within the rules,” he asserted.
This statement comes in response to allegations by the Karnataka State Contractors’ Association (KSCA) that government officials demand bribes for clearing bills and awarding contracts. The KSCA had threatened to halt ongoing projects if their demands for timely payments and transparency were not met.
Steps Towards Transparency and Accountability
Shivakumar, who also oversees Bengaluru Development, assured that the government is taking measures to streamline the payment process and ensure accountability. “We are implementing a new system to expedite payments and reduce delays. Transparency will be our top priority, and any complaints of corruption will be dealt with strictly,” he said.
Mixed Reactions and Political Criticism
The Deputy CM’s remarks have elicited mixed reactions. While some contractors welcomed his assurances, others remain skeptical, citing past unfulfilled promises. “We have heard such assurances before, but nothing has changed on the ground. The government needs to walk the talk,” said an anonymous contractor.
Opposition parties, including the BJP, criticized the government’s handling of the issue. BJP leader R. Ashok accused the Congress-led administration of mismanagement and corruption. “The government’s mismanagement and corrupt practices have pushed contractors to the brink. Empty promises will not solve the issue,” he said.
What’s Next for Karnataka’s Contractors and Government?
As tensions between the government and contractors persist, the administration’s next steps are under scrutiny. Will it successfully address contractors’ concerns while maintaining its authority? Shivakumar’s approach—a blend of empathy and firmness—sets the tone for navigating this complex issue.
