CM Omar Abdullah Advocates for Reopening J&K Tourist Spots Post-Pahalgam Attack
In a bid to rejuvenate Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has urged the immediate reopening of several tourist destinations that were closed following the Pahalgam attack six months ago. The April 2023 attack, which targeted tourists, caused a significant decline in visitor numbers, severely impacting the local economy.
The Impact of the Pahalgam Attack on Tourism
The Pahalgam attack, a militant ambush that left several tourists injured, led to the closure of key destinations like Pahalgam valley, Sonamarg, and Gulmarg. While the closures were intended to ensure visitor safety, they resulted in substantial economic losses for a region heavily dependent on tourism.
Abdullah’s Call for Balance Between Security and Economy
At a Srinagar press conference, Abdullah stressed the importance of balancing security concerns with economic recovery. “Tourism is the lifeblood of Jammu and Kashmir. While security is paramount, we cannot let thousands of livelihoods be destroyed,” he said. His appeal has gained support from industry stakeholders, with the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) estimating losses exceeding ₹1,500 crore.
Psychological and Economic Toll on the Region
Abdullah also highlighted the psychological impact of prolonged closures, stating, “The absence of tourists reinforces the false perception that Kashmir is unsafe. We must change this narrative.” Meanwhile, security experts warn that reopening must be accompanied by enhanced safety measures, including increased patrolling and surveillance.
Administration’s Response and the Road Ahead
The J&K administration is reportedly reviewing the situation, with a decision pending based on security assessments. As winter approaches, the urgency to salvage the tourism season grows. Abdullah’s appeal underscores the need to restore normalcy and reclaim Kashmir’s identity as a resilient and welcoming destination.
