Union Minister for Civil Aviation and Steel, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, has promised swift action to secure the release of 13 fishermen from Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, detained in Bangladesh since June 2024. The fishermen, from Bhogapuram and Pudimadaka, were held for allegedly crossing maritime boundaries. The minister’s intervention has brought hope to their distressed families.
What Led to the Fishermen’s Detention?
On June 12, 2024, the fishermen ventured into the Bay of Bengal but strayed into Bangladeshi waters due to bad weather and navigation errors. The Bangladesh Coast Guard detained them, sparking protests in Andhra Pradesh.
This incident highlights recurring challenges faced by Indian fishermen, including unclear maritime boundaries and outdated navigation tools.
Government Steps to Secure Their Release
Minister Rammohan Naidu, representing Srikakulam Lok Sabha (which includes Vizianagaram), engaged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Indian High Commission in Dhaka to expedite the process.
He stated, “We are in constant talks with Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the fishermen’s safe return. The MEA is handling this with urgency.”
Naidu stressed the need for diplomatic resolutions, avoiding prolonged legal hurdles for such humanitarian cases.
Families Await Their Return
The detained fishermen are primary earners for their families, leaving them financially and emotionally strained.
Sundaramma, wife of a detained fisherman, pleaded, “We don’t know his condition. The government must bring them home soon.”
Local leaders and fishermen’s groups demand better maritime policies, GPS-equipped boats, and clearer fishing zone demarcations to prevent future incidents.
India-Bangladesh Diplomatic Efforts
