Man Killed in Violent Clash Over Music at Kali Puja Celebrations
A horrific incident in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district left a 32-year-old man dead after a dispute over music at a Kali Puja pandal turned violent. The attack occurred late Tuesday night in Habra, casting a pall over the festive atmosphere and raising concerns about public safety during religious events.
How the Altercation Escalated
Eyewitnesses reported that the victim, Sourav Sarkar, was caught in a heated argument between two groups over the volume and selection of music at the pandal. According to police, tensions flared, and one of the assailants, allegedly intoxicated, stabbed Sarkar multiple times.
“Sourav was trying to mediate when he was attacked. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries,” said a senior police officer.
Police Respond with Arrests, Investigation Underway
Authorities quickly detained four suspects linked to the crime. A case has been filed under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC, with initial investigations pointing to prior personal disputes and alcohol consumption as key triggers.
Locals revealed that the accused and victim had a history of minor feuds, but the brutality of the attack shocked the community.
Community Leaders Condemn Violence, Demand Stronger Security
The killing has sparked outrage, with religious and civic leaders urging peace. “Festivals should unite, not divide. Such violence is unacceptable,” said a local priest.
Political figures and activists called for tighter security at public gatherings to prevent similar tragedies. Past festivals in Bengal have seen clashes over music, processions, and petty disagreements, highlighting systemic issues in crowd management.
Family Seeks Justice for Slain Businessman
Sourav Sarkar, a small-time businessman, leaves behind a wife and a six-year-old daughter. His grieving family demands swift justice. “He went to celebrate—not to die,” his mother told reporters.
Will This Prompt Change?
As police probe deeper, the incident underscores the need for better conflict resolution and alcohol control during festivals. With Kali Puja ongoing, authorities have stepped up patrols to avoid further violence.
