New Delhi: A late-night police operation in South East Delhi’s Badarpur area culminated in a dramatic shootout and the arrest of a notorious criminal wanted in a high-profile armed robbery case on Tuesday. A dedicated team from the Delhi Police Crime Branch cornered the suspect, who sustained a gunshot injury to his leg during the encounter.
The High-Profile Saket Robbery
The arrested individual has been identified as Vikram Singh, also known as ‘Vicky’, a 32-year-old resident of Faridabad who had been evading law enforcement for over three months. According to senior police officials, Vikram was the prime suspect and alleged mastermind behind a brazen daytime armed robbery at a financial services office in Saket earlier this year. In that incident, he and his associates allegedly held staff at gunpoint before escaping with over ₹15 lakh in cash.
A Meticulously Planned Police Operation
The successful capture was orchestrated following specific intelligence received by the Crime Branch. “We had been tracking Vikram’s movements for weeks,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Rajesh Sharma. “Our team received a credible tip-off that he would be passing through the Badarpur area on a stolen motorcycle late last night, likely to meet an associate. A strategic trap was immediately laid near the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road.”
Dramatic Chase and Gunfire Exchange
Around 1:30 AM, police teams spotted a motorcyclist matching Vikram’s description. When signalled to stop at a checkpoint, Vikram sensed the trap, swerved abruptly, and attempted to flee into the area’s narrow lanes. As the Crime Branch team pursued him, the cornered suspect allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol and opened fire on the officers.
“He fired at least two rounds in a desperate attempt to escape, forcing our team to retaliate in self-defence,” DCP Sharma added. “Our officers exercised maximum restraint and fired low, aiming to incapacitate him.” The police response led to a single bullet hitting Vikram in his right leg, causing him to fall from his motorcycle.
Suspect Injured and Apprehended
The police team swiftly moved in and overpowered Vikram before he could fire again. The injured suspect was immediately transported to a nearby government hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable. He remains under police guard and will be formally processed for arrest after his discharge.
From the scene, police recovered a semi-automatic .315 bore pistol, two live cartridges, and a spent shell. The motorcycle he was riding was confirmed to have been stolen from the Okhla industrial area last month.
Investigation Widens, Hunt for Accomplices On
Vikram Singh is a known history-sheeter with over a dozen cases of robbery, snatching, and assault registered against him in Delhi and Haryana. His arrest is being hailed as a significant breakthrough in the Saket armed robbery case and the city’s broader efforts to curb violent crime.
Authorities are now interrogating Vikram to extract information about his accomplices and uncover his wider criminal network. “This arrest sends a strong message that criminal elements cannot escape the long arm of the law,” a senior official stated. The investigation has intensified the hunt for the remaining members of his gang.
