Startling Counter-Allegations Emerge
PUNE – In a dramatic turn in the Maharashtra doctor’s suicide case, the Pune-based software engineer arrested for abetment has made startling counter-allegations. The arrested Pune techie, Rohan Verma, now alleges she harassed him and relentlessly insisted that he marry her, a claim that adds a new layer of complexity to the tragic death of 28-year-old Dr. Anjali Sharma.
The case unfolded last week after Dr. Sharma, a promising physician, was found dead in her apartment. A complaint by her family alleged that Verma, her long-term boyfriend, was mentally harassing her, leading to her suicide. Police subsequently arrested Verma under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (Abetment of suicide).
However, the narrative shifted significantly during Verma’s bail hearing. His defense team presented a version of events portraying him not as an abuser, but as a victim of psychological pressure.
Defense Claims Digital Evidence of Harassment
According to Verma’s counsel, Advocate Prakash Jadhav, the techie was subjected to “intense emotional blackmail” by Dr. Sharma.
“My client is being wrongfully vilified,” Jadhav stated outside the Pune Sessions Court. “The truth is that Mr. Verma was the one being harassed. Dr. Sharma insisted on immediate marriage, and when my client asked for more time to become financially stable and speak to his family, he was met with threats and ultimatums.”
The defense claims to have digital evidence, including text messages and call recordings, to support the Pune techie’s allegation that she harassed him. They argue this evidence will reveal a pattern of coercive behaviour from Dr. Sharma that placed immense strain on their client. While acknowledging the tragedy of her death, they contend Verma is not responsible for an act stemming from her alleged emotional demands.
Victim’s Family Slams “Cruel” Defamation Attempt
Dr. Sharma’s family has met these claims with outrage, dismissing them as a desperate tactic to evade justice.
“This is a shameless and cruel attempt to defame our daughter after she is gone,” her grieving father told reporters. “He drove her to this point with his constant manipulation and false promises, and now he is trying to play the victim. We have full faith in the judiciary to see through these lies.”
The family’s lawyer maintains that Verma was emotionally abusive and had been avoiding his marriage commitment for years, which ultimately broke Dr. Sharma’s spirit.
Pune Police to Investigate New Claims
Following this twist in the Maharashtra doctor’s suicide case, Pune Police officials have confirmed they are examining the new evidence. A senior officer stated that they will verify the authenticity and context of the digital records submitted by Verma’s legal team.
“We are committed to a fair and thorough investigation,” the official said on condition of anonymity. “All claims will be scrutinized in this sensitive matter.”
The case now rests in a difficult ‘he-said, she-said’ territory, where the voice of one party is tragically absent. As the court deliberates on Rohan Verma’s bail plea, the city awaits to see which version of this tragic story the evidence will ultimately support.
