Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh – In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the district, a one-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed to death by his alcoholic father in a fit of drunken rage. The chilling event unfolded late Tuesday night in a small village in the Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
A Drunken Quarrel Turns Fatal
According to police, the accused, 35-year-old Ramesh Kumar, was a daily wage labourer with a severe alcohol addiction. On the night of the incident, he returned home heavily intoxicated and began arguing with his wife, Sunita. Neighbours reported that the fight, a frequent occurrence, was about Ramesh’s demand for more money to buy liquor.
As the quarrel escalated, Sunita attempted to leave the house with their infant son, Ankit. In a moment of unimaginable brutality, Ramesh allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and, in a blind rage, attacked the child. The single stab wound proved fatal for the toddler.
Horrified Neighbours Intervene
The mother’s horrified screams alerted neighbours, who rushed to the scene to find the infant in a pool of blood. The villagers immediately apprehended Ramesh, who was still in a drunken stupor, and informed the local police.
“He would drink every single day,” a neighbour recounted. “He would beat her and fight for money. We never thought he was capable of something this monstrous.”
Police Arrest Father, Launch Investigation
A police team arrived promptly and arrested Ramesh at the scene. The infant was rushed to a nearby government hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Speaking to the media, Superintendent of Police (SP) City, Sanjay Kumar, confirmed the details. “The preliminary investigation points to a domestic dispute fueled by the accused’s alcoholism. We have taken him into custody and registered an FIR under Section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The weapon has been recovered, and the child’s body has been sent for post-mortem.”
The grief-stricken mother, Sunita, is in a state of shock, her statement to the police painting a grim picture of the constant abuse she faced due to her husband’s addiction.
A Symptom of a Deeper Social Issue
This horrific act casts a harsh spotlight on the deadly combination of poverty, domestic violence, and alcoholism that plagues many rural households. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for robust social support systems and accessible de-addiction centres in regions where such facilities are scarce.
As the police investigation continues, a community is left to grapple with how a father, meant to be a protector, could become his own son’s killer.
