Assembly Committee Assures Development of Ancient Chandramouleshwar Temple in Hubballi
In a landmark decision to safeguard Karnataka’s cultural legacy, the Assembly Committee on Religious Endowments has pledged comprehensive restoration and development of the historic Chandramouleshwar Temple in Hubballi. This move follows persistent appeals from devotees and heritage activists to revive the neglected shrine.
The Historical Significance of Chandramouleshwar Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the 12th-century Chandramouleshwar Temple was built during the Kalyani Chalukya dynasty, showcasing Dravidian architecture and intricate stone carvings. Over time, the temple suffered decay due to weathering, poor upkeep, and encroachment.
Dr. Rajeshwari Patil, a noted archaeologist, emphasized, “This temple is a masterpiece of Chalukyan craftsmanship. Restoring it will revive Hubballi’s cultural roots.”
Restoration Plan: Key Measures Announced
Led by Chairman MLA Basavaraj Horatti, the committee outlined a multi-phase revival strategy, including:
- Structural Conservation – Expert-led repairs for damaged pillars, sanctum walls, and carvings while preserving originality.
- Infrastructure Upgrades – Enhanced roads, lighting, and sanitation to improve pilgrim access.
- Tourism Integration – Inclusion in Hubballi-Dharwad’s heritage circuit to attract visitors.
- Encroachment Removal – Clearing illegal settlements to reclaim temple land.
“This temple is a state treasure. Funds will be allocated swiftly, with strict oversight,” assured Horatti.
Public & Political Response
The announcement has drawn praise:
– MLA Mahesh Tenginakai hailed it as a “win for devotees.”
– Hubballi Heritage Foundation urged involvement of local artisans.
However, activists like Suresh Kulkarni (Save Our Temples) cautioned, “Past promises saw delays. Execution is key.”
Karnataka’s Temple Conservation Wave
This project aligns with statewide efforts, including restorations at Shivappa Nayaka Fort (Shivamogga) and Kudalasangama Temple (Bagalkot). Dr. Meera Iyer, a historian, noted, “Heritage revival strengthens identity and tourism.”
Next Steps
A detailed project report (DPR) will be submitted within a month, followed by tender approvals.
Temple priest Shankar Joshi expressed hope: “This marks a rebirth for Chandramouleshwar. May Shiva’s blessings guide the work.”
