Two Women in Bengal Defy Norms to Marry Each Other
In a historic moment for LGBTQ+ rights in India, Sathi Das (22) and Mousumi Manna (20) from West Bengal’s Nadia district tied the knot in a traditional Hindu wedding, boldly asserting their love despite societal resistance. Their ceremony—though not legally recognized—sends a powerful message of defiance in a country where same-sex marriage remains illegal.
A Traditional Wedding with a Revolutionary Twist
On June 15, the couple exchanged garlands and applied sindoor (vermilion)—a sacred Hindu marital symbol—in a vibrant ceremony in Chakdah. Dressed in red and gold sarees, Sathi (a tailor) and Mousumi (a homemaker) embraced rituals typically reserved for heterosexual unions.
“We are not afraid anymore. Society may not accept us, but we have the right to decide our lives,” Sathi told NextMinuteNews.
Family Acceptance vs. Societal Backlash
While Mousumi’s mother initially resisted, she later supported the couple—a rare occurrence in rural India where LGBTQ+ relationships remain taboo. However, locals criticized them, calling the union “against nature.”
“We knew there would be challenges, but love is stronger than fear,” Mousumi responded.
Legal Barriers and the Fight for Recognition
Though India decriminalized homosexuality in 2018, same-sex marriage remains unrecognized. Activists like Anindya Hajra (Kolkata LGBTQ+ rights advocate) praise the couple’s bravery, saying: “Their love challenges deep-rooted prejudices.”
A Growing Movement for Equality
This wedding is part of a rising wave of queer couples publicly marrying across India—from Kerala to Odisha. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is deliberating on petitions to legalize same-sex marriage, with activists hopeful for change.
What’s Next for the Couple?
Sathi and Mousumi plan to start a tailoring business and hope their story inspires others.
“If we can do this in a small town, others can too,” says Sathi.
Their story proves that love and courage can spark change—even without legal recognition.
