The political landscape in Bihar has taken another dramatic turn as the opposition Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), led by the RJD and Congress, grapples with internal conflicts ahead of the state elections. While major allies have softened their demands to prevent a full-blown split, simmering dissent and “friendly fights” threaten unity. In a major setback, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has walked out of the alliance, weakening opposition cohesion.
Opposition Compromises, But Internal Rifts Persist
Tensions within the Mahagathbandhan peaked as smaller allies—including CPI-ML, HAM, and VIP—pushed for more seats. After intense negotiations, most parties have reportedly scaled back demands, allowing the RJD and Congress to finalize seat-sharing.
Sources suggest the RJD will contest around 140 of Bihar’s 243 seats, leaving the Congress with 70. The remaining seats will be distributed among smaller partners, though disagreements persist.
Despite the compromise, “friendly fights” remain a concern. Some regional parties, including VIP and HAM, are dissatisfied with seat allocations and may field rebel candidates, potentially splitting the anti-BJP vote and aiding the NDA.
JMM’s Exit Deals Blow to Opposition Unity
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), a key ally, has officially quit the alliance, citing “irreconcilable differences” with the RJD. Leader Hemant Soren accused the RJD of a “big brother” approach and announced plans to contest independently.
JMM’s exit is significant—it holds sway in Bihar’s tribal-dominated regions, particularly near the Jharkhand border. Without its support, the Mahagathbandhan may struggle to consolidate tribal votes, a crucial demographic.
NDA Smiles as Opposition Struggles
The BJP-JD(U) alliance is watching the opposition’s turmoil with glee. The NDA has largely settled its seat-sharing, with the BJP expected to contest 120 seats and JD(U) around 100.
BJP leaders have mocked the Mahagathbandhan’s disarray. “The Grand Alliance is a sinking ship,” said Bihar BJP chief Sanjay Jaiswal. JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar called the infighting proof of the opposition’s “lack of vision.”
Can the Opposition Recover Before Polls?
With election dates pending, the Mahagathbandhan has little time to resolve disputes. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav remains confident, claiming “minor issues won’t derail our mission.” However, analysts warn that without unity, the alliance risks repeating past failures.
As Bihar’s political drama unfolds, the NDA stands to gain from its rivals’ chaos. One thing is clear—more twists, negotiations, and defections are likely before polling begins.
