New Delhi – In a major boost to Himachal Pradesh‘s infrastructure recovery, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has sanctioned a ₹93.55 crore project for the urgent repair and strengthening of embankments along National Highway-154A (NH-154A).
This funding directly addresses the catastrophic damage caused by the unprecedented monsoon of 2023. The torrential rains and flash floods, particularly from the overflowing Ravi river, washed away huge sections of the highway’s protective embankments, severely disrupting the vital link between Chamba and Pathankot.
Scope of the Embankment Repair Project
The approved funds are designated for comprehensive engineering solutions aimed at restoring the highway’s foundational integrity. The project goes beyond simple patchwork, focusing on building long-term resilience against future extreme weather events. Key activities will include:
- Reconstruction of damaged retaining walls.
- Advanced slope stabilization measures.
- Installation of modern, resilient gabion walls.
- Strengthening the embankments that serve as the first line of defence against river erosion.
MoRTH officials have confirmed that the project will utilize advanced geological surveys and construction techniques to ensure durability in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region.
NH-154A: A Critical Lifeline for the Chamba Valley
National Highway-154A is the primary economic and social artery for the entire Chamba district. Its significance cannot be overstated, as it provides the main land route to Pathankot in Punjab, connecting the remote valley to major commercial centers and the national railway network.
The highway is indispensable for:
* Agriculture: Transporting apples and other produce from local growers to national markets.
* Tourism: Providing access to popular destinations like Chamba, Dalhousie, and Khajjiar.
* Daily Commute: Ensuring residents can access essential services and goods.
The prolonged closures last year caused immense hardship for the local population and inflicted substantial losses on businesses, making this restoration project a top priority.
A Step Towards a Climate-Resilient Himachal
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu welcomed the central government’s decision, highlighting it as a crucial component of the state’s broader rebuilding efforts. The state government has consistently pursued disaster relief funds from the Centre, estimating the total damage from the 2023 monsoon to be over ₹10,000 crore.
As Himachal braces for the upcoming monsoon season, the timely execution of these repair works is critical. This centrally-funded project is a significant investment in the safety of commuters and the economic stability of the Chamba region, marking a vital step in rebuilding a more climate-resilient Himachal.
