Chennai Rain Triggers School Holiday as IMD Predicts More Showers
Chennai, December 4, 2023 – The Tamil Nadu government has announced a holiday for schools in Chennai and nearby districts after heavy rainfall disrupted daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert, warning of intense rainfall for the next 48 hours. The decision aims to ensure student and staff safety amid severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
Heavy Rainfall Paralyzes Key Areas
Chennai recorded over 150 mm of rain in 24 hours, with Nungambakkam, Meenambakkam, and Tambaram worst affected. Low-lying areas like Velachery and Kolathur face severe waterlogging, forcing residents to wade through knee-deep water. The Chennai Corporation has deployed emergency teams to clear drains and assist stranded locals.
Public transport has been hit, with delayed trains and diverted bus routes due to flooding. Chennai Airport reported minor flight disruptions, urging passengers to check schedules before traveling.
Government’s Emergency Response
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered officials to monitor the situation closely. NDRF teams are on standby, and the Greater Chennai Corporation has set up 24/7 control rooms for waterlogging and power outage complaints.
The School Education Department stated: “All government, aided, and private schools in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts will remain closed due to the weather warning. Further updates depend on conditions.”
Residents Fear Repeat of 2015 Floods
Continuous rain has revived memories of Chennai’s 2015 floods, which caused widespread damage. While officials claim better preparedness, locals in vulnerable areas remain concerned.
“Water entered our ground floor—we’re moving essentials upstairs,” said Ramesh Kumar, a Saidapet resident. “We hope rains ease soon.”
IMD Forecast and Safety Alerts
The IMD links the downpour to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, predicting isolated heavy rainfall (200+ mm) in 48 hours. Coastal areas may see thunderstorms, and fishermen are warned against venturing out.
