Tensions Flare in Elappully Over Brewery Proposal
Elappully, Palakkad, witnessed violent clashes as CPI(M) workers laid siege to the local panchayat office on Tuesday, protesting against a proposed brewery. The demonstration, marked by roadblocks and sloganeering, has reignited debates on industrialization, environmental impact, and political hypocrisy in Kerala.
Why the Brewery is Controversial
A private company’s brewery project, granted preliminary clearance by the panchayat, has faced fierce opposition from CPI(M), residents, and eco-activists. Critics argue the facility will deplete groundwater, increase pollution, and harm the region’s agrarian economy.
Congress leader V.D. Satheesan accused CPI(M) of hypocrisy, citing its support for similar projects elsewhere. “They back industries in power but protest them in opposition—this is sheer duplicity,” he said.
Siege and Clashes with Police
Hundreds of CPI(M) workers surrounded the panchayat office, demanding revocation of the brewery’s approval. Police deployed in force to control the unrest, which saw minor scuffles and roadblocks.
“The panchayat ignored public consent. We won’t let this project proceed,” a CPI(M) leader stated. Panchayat president K. Rajan defended the decision, insisting due process was followed.
Divided Public Opinion
While activists and CPI(M) oppose the brewery, some locals, including youth and business owners, support it for job creation. “Kerala needs investment, not endless protests,” said an anonymous resident.
Ecologist Dr. R. Sridhar countered, “Palakkad’s water scarcity will worsen. Sustainable alternatives are needed.”
Political Repercussions
The protest deepens Kerala’s left-right divide, with CPI(M) facing accusations of obstructionism. The state government has yet to intervene, leaving the panchayat to handle the crisis.
