India Condemns Pakistan’s Human Rights Record at UNSC
In a powerful address at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India delivered a sharp rebuke to Pakistan over its human rights violations while firmly stating that Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) remains an “inalienable part” of India. The remarks were made by India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, during a UNSC debate on Wednesday.
Kamboj accused Pakistan of “grave human rights violations“ in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and demanded an immediate end to its “illegal occupation.”
India’s Strong Rebuttal to Pakistan’s Kashmir Claims
Ambassador Kamboj’s statement was a direct response to Pakistan’s repeated attempts to internationalize the Kashmir issue. Without naming Pakistan directly, she criticized its history of cross-border terrorism and systematic persecution of minorities.
“The only dispute left in Jammu and Kashmir is the illegal occupation of certain territories by Pakistan. The Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been, are, and will always remain an integral part of India,” Kamboj asserted.
She also labeled Pakistan a “hub of terrorism” and a “safe haven for UN-designated terrorists,” citing Islamabad’s long-standing support for militant groups.
Human Rights Abuses in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK)
In a strategic move, India shifted focus to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), highlighting widespread reports of forced disappearances, political repression, and economic deprivation.
“While Pakistan lectures others on human rights, it has turned PoK into a fortress of oppression. The people there have been denied basic freedoms for decades,” Kamboj said.
The statement comes as Pakistan faces scrutiny over its treatment of minorities, including forced conversions and land seizures targeting Hindus and Sikhs in PoK.
Pakistan’s Failed UNSC Move
Pakistan’s envoy attempted to raise the Kashmir issue, but the effort backfired, with multiple UNSC members reiterating that Kashmir is a bilateral matter under the Simla Agreement and Lahore Declaration.
Diplomatic sources suggest Pakistan’s isolation has deepened since India’s 2019 abrogation of Article 370, which New Delhi maintains was an internal matter for full integration of J&K.
Global Reactions & India’s Diplomatic Victory
Key nations, including the U.S., France, and Russia, have consistently maintained that Kashmir is not a UN issue. Meanwhile, China—Pakistan’s closest ally—remained muted, signaling reluctance to escalate tensions with India.
What’s Next for India-Pakistan Relations?
India’s firm stance underscores that talks with Pakistan will only resume if it ends cross-border terrorism. With Pakistan’s economy struggling and its global credibility waning, New Delhi has strengthened its diplomatic position.
The message is clear: Jammu and Kashmir is non-negotiable, and Pakistan must address its own human rights crisis before pointing fingers.
