Karan Johar Opens Up About Salman Khan’s Untapped Action Hero Potential
In a recent candid conversation, acclaimed filmmaker Karan Johar shed light on a lesser-known chapter of Salman Khan’s illustrious career. He revealed how Baaghi: A Rebel for Love (1990), Salman’s second Bollywood film, could have transformed him into Bollywood’s definitive action hero.
The Film That Showcased Salman’s Versatility
Released just a year after his debut in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Baaghi presented Salman Khan in a completely different avatar. Directed by Deepak Shivdasani, the film was a remake of the Telugu hit Khaidi and revolved around themes of rebellion, justice, and love. Salman played Surya, a character who takes on a corrupt system to avenge his family’s suffering.
Karan Johar reflected, “Baaghi was a game-changer in many ways. Salman’s performance was raw, intense, and filled with energy. It was an eye-opener for the industry, proving he wasn’t just a romantic hero but also a force to reckon with in action.”
Why Baaghi Didn’t Become a Turning Point
Despite its potential, Baaghi didn’t achieve the commercial success it deserved. Johar explained, “The film was ahead of its time. The action genre wasn’t as popular then, and romantic films dominated the box office. If Baaghi had released today, it could have been a massive hit.”
He added, “Had the film been a bigger success, it might have paved the way for Salman to become the go-to action hero much earlier in his career.”
Salman Khan’s Journey to Becoming Bollywood’s Action Icon
While Baaghi didn’t immediately establish Salman as an action star, he later embraced the genre with blockbusters like Wanted (2009), Dabangg (2010), and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017). Johar’s insights highlight how Baaghi was a missed opportunity to fast-track this transformation.
A Nostalgic Look at a Road Not Taken
Johar’s revelations offer a fresh perspective on Salman Khan’s career, emphasizing his willingness to take risks and experiment with roles. As fans revisit Baaghi, it stands as a testament to the untapped potential of one of Bollywood’s most enduring superstars.
