Chennai: A new low-pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a heavy rainfall alert for Tamil Nadu. This developing weather system is expected to bring a fresh, intense spell of rain across the state over the next 72 hours.
The system, currently located off the Sri Lanka coast, is associated with a cyclonic circulation extending up to mid-tropospheric levels. Meteorologists are closely tracking its movement, which is predicted to be slow and west-northwestwards, gathering strength as it approaches the Tamil Nadu coast. This marks a significant shift in weather patterns for the state, which has recently experienced a mix of high temperatures and scattered showers.
IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning for These Districts
The IMD forecast indicates that the rainfall will intensify significantly from Wednesday evening. Several coastal, delta, and southern districts have been placed on alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by potential thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The primary impact is expected in the following areas:
- Coastal Districts: Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram are on high alert. Residents should prepare for intense downpours that could lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
- Delta Districts: Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, and Tiruvarur are also forecast to receive substantial rainfall.
- Southern Districts: The wet spell is likely to extend to areas like Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi as the system moves across the region.
State Authorities on High Alert, NDRF on Standby
In response to the IMD alert, the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) has activated its preparedness protocols. District collectors have been directed to ensure that drainage systems are clear, review emergency measures, and prepare relief centres.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been positioned on standby for rapid deployment should the need arise.
Crucial Advisory Issued for Fishermen
A specific and urgent advisory has been issued for the fishing community. Due to anticipated rough sea conditions and strong surface winds, fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into the southwest Bay of Bengal and along the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts for the next few days. Those currently at sea have been urged to return to shore immediately.
“This low-pressure system is drawing a massive amount of moisture from the warm waters of the Bay,” explained Dr. S. Balachandran, a senior weather analyst. “Its slow movement is a cause for concern, as it means the system could dump a large quantity of rain over a concentrated area for a prolonged period. We are urging citizens to stay updated with official IMD bulletins and avoid spreading unverified news on social media.”
As Tamil Nadu braces for this weather event, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe.
