Restoration of Tirupati’s Padalamandapam Begins November 2024
The sacred town of Tirupati, home to the revered Sri Venkateswara Temple, is set to restore its ancient Padalamandapam at Alipiri. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has announced that conservation work on this heritage structure will commence in November 2024, safeguarding its cultural and spiritual legacy.
Historical Significance of the Padalamandapam
Constructed during the Vijayanagara Empire, the Padalamandapam served as a pilgrim rest stop for devotees trekking the Alipiri route to Tirumala. The pavilion features intricate carvings, inscriptions, and mythological depictions, reflecting the empire’s architectural brilliance.
Years of weathering and neglect led to its deterioration, prompting TTD and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to intervene.
Restoration Plan: Key Details
With a ₹2.5 crore budget, the project will:
– Repair cracks in pillars and ceilings using lime mortar & traditional techniques.
– Preserve ancient carvings and inscriptions.
– Improve accessibility for pilgrims without compromising sanctity.
TTD Chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy stated: “This restoration honors Tirupati’s spiritual heritage while ensuring safety for future generations.”
Why This Project Matters
- Revives pilgrimage heritage: The mandapam has been a spiritual waypoint for centuries.
- Boosts heritage tourism: Andhra Pradesh aims to promote cultural tourism, with Alipiri as a key stop.
Community & Devotee Reactions
Local historians and pilgrims welcome the move. Dr. S. Rajagopal, a historian, called it a “tribute to Vijayanagara craftsmanship.” Devotee Ramesh Kumar (Chennai) shared: “Restoring this sacred spot renews its divine energy.”
What’s Next?
The November 2024 start marks a milestone in Tirupati’s heritage conservation. Updates will follow as work progresses.
