BJP Rejects Tamil Nadu Minister’s Allegations
In a strong rebuttal to Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu’s accusations of the central government withholding funds, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains focused on development and governance, not “petty politics.” This response comes amid rising tensions between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the BJP-led Centre over fiscal allocations and state autonomy.
Tamil Nadu’s Claims and BJP’s Counter
During a recent press conference, Thennarasu accused the Centre of denying funds to Tamil Nadu, alleging that the state’s development projects were being hindered due to insufficient financial support. He claimed the central government’s “step-motherly treatment” was a deliberate effort to undermine Tamil Nadu’s growth.
However, the BJP dismissed these accusations as baseless and politically motivated. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated, “The Prime Minister’s vision is clear—development for all, discrimination against none. Tamil Nadu has been a significant beneficiary of central schemes and funds. These allegations are an attempt to divert attention from the DMK government’s governance failures.”
Central Funds and Development Initiatives
Chandrasekhar highlighted Tamil Nadu’s substantial financial assistance under central schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Bharatmala Project. He also noted that the state was allocated over ₹1.5 lakh crore in the 2023-24 Union Budget, reflecting the Centre’s commitment to its progress.
Rising Federal Tensions
The DMK, a key member of the Opposition’s INDIA bloc, has increasingly criticized the Centre, accusing it of using fiscal policies to control non-BJP-ruled states. The party has raised concerns over delayed fund releases and conditional financial assistance.
Political analyst S. Narayanan observed, “The DMK is positioning itself as the champion of Tamil Nadu’s rights, while the BJP emphasizes equitable development. This clash is likely to intensify as the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach.”
BJP Questions DMK’s Governance
The BJP has also questioned the DMK government’s utilization of central funds. Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged inefficiencies in implementing central schemes, stating, “Instead of blaming the Centre, the DMK should introspect on its governance. Tamil Nadu deserves better.”
Social Media War and Public Sentiment
The controversy has sparked a social media battle, with DMK supporters accusing the BJP of neglecting Tamil Nadu, while BJP supporters highlight initiatives like the Chennai Metro expansion and the Chennai-Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor.
Citizens, however, express frustration over the lack of accountability. Coimbatore resident R. Meenakshi said, “We need development, not blame games. Both parties should focus on delivering results.”
Political Stakes Ahead of 2024 Elections
As the 2024 elections approach, the BJP aims to project itself as a development-focused party, while the DMK positions itself as the defender of Tamil Nadu’s interests. The political stakes in the state have never been higher.
The BJP’s message is clear: Prime Minister Modi prioritizes inclusive growth over petty politics. The challenge for both parties will be to prove their commitment to Tamil Nadu through actions, not just words.
