Patna: As the nation holds its breath for the final verdict of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Bihar has transformed into a virtual fortress. With just hours to go for the counting of votes on June 4th, state and central authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a peaceful and transparent process, deploying a massive security blanket across all 36 counting centres.
The political temperature in Bihar, which witnessed a high-stakes, multi-phased electoral battle across its 40 parliamentary constituencies, remains exceptionally high. In anticipation of potential post-result tensions, a comprehensive security plan has been meticulously rolled out.
Three-Tier Security Cordon at Counting Centres
The nerve centres of this operation are the strongrooms where the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been stored. According to top officials from the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office, a robust three-tier security cordon has been established around every counting centre.
The innermost ring is being manned exclusively by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), such as the CRPF and CISF, who have been guarding the EVMs round-the-clock. The subsequent layers are being managed by the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP) and the district police forces, creating an impenetrable security perimeter.
“Our primary objective is to ensure that the counting process is conducted without any hindrance,” a senior police official in Patna stated. “We have clear instructions to deal firmly with any elements attempting to create a law-and-order situation. There will be zero tolerance for any form of disruption.”
Prohibitory Orders and Ban on Victory Processions
In addition to the static deployment, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been promulgated in and around the counting centres. This measure bans the assembly of four or more people, effectively preventing large gatherings of political workers that could lead to clashes. Mobile patrol units and quick reaction teams have also been put on high alert.
Furthermore, a significant directive issued by the Election Commission, and being strictly enforced by the state administration, is the complete ban on victory processions immediately after the results are declared. This pre-emptive step is aimed at preventing escalations between supporters of rival political parties.
High-Stakes Political Contest Fuels Tensions
The intense security measures reflect the fiercely contested nature of the election in Bihar. The battle between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition’s INDIA bloc has been one of the most closely watched contests in the country. With the fate of several political heavyweights hanging in the balance, the administrative machinery is geared up for any eventuality.
A dedicated cyber cell is also actively monitoring social media platforms to curb the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content that could incite violence.
As the dawn of June 4th approaches, all eyes will be on these fortified counting centres. The extensive security deployment serves as a crucial guarantee for the sanctity of the democratic process, ensuring that the people’s verdict is counted and declared in a safe and secure environment.
