Sonowal’s Ceremonial Welcome Marks a Milestone for India’s Maritime Sector
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, extended a ceremonial welcome to the ‘Very Large Gas Carrier’ (VLGC) Shivalik at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai. This event highlights India’s growing prowess in maritime logistics and its commitment to energy security.
Shivalik: A Game-Changer in India’s LPG Supply Chain
The Shivalik, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, is one of the largest VLGCs globally, with a capacity of 84,000 cubic meters of LPG. This state-of-the-art vessel is set to bolster India’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) trade, addressing the rising demand driven by the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
Strengthening Energy Security and Infrastructure
Minister Sonowal emphasized the vessel’s role in ensuring a steady LPG supply for millions of households. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to modernize port infrastructure, positioning India as a global maritime hub under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Reducing Logistics Costs and Enhancing Efficiency
As India remains the world’s second-largest LPG importer, the Shivalik’s ability to transport large volumes in a single trip is expected to cut logistics costs and improve supply chain efficiency.
Advanced Features for Safe and Efficient Operations
Captain Rajesh Tandon praised the Shivalik’s advanced navigation systems and safety measures, ensuring smooth operations even in challenging maritime conditions.
A Symbol of India’s Maritime Aspirations
The event concluded with a traditional maritime salute, symbolizing the Shivalik’s safe arrival and its significance for India’s maritime and energy sectors.
