Tripura’s Anti-Narcotics Operation Gains Momentum After Massive Drug Bust
Tripura has ramped up its efforts to combat the narcotics trade following a significant drug bust that has shaken the state. The seizure, which included narcotics worth crores of rupees, has highlighted the growing issue of drug trafficking. The operation, conducted by the Tripura Police and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), took place in Agartala in the early hours of Tuesday. Authorities confiscated over 50 kilograms of heroin, methamphetamine, and other illegal substances, along with cash and vehicles allegedly used for smuggling. This operation, one of the largest in the state’s history, has been hailed as a major victory against drug cartels.
Tripura’s Director General of Police (DGP), Amitabh Ranjan, emphasized the state’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace. “This operation demonstrates our resolve to bring those involved in this illegal trade to justice,” he said. Several suspects have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing to dismantle the smuggling network.
Opposition Accuses Ruling Party of Complicity
While the authorities have been praised for their efforts, the Opposition has leveled serious allegations against the ruling party. Jitendra Chaudhury, leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], accused the BJP and the administration of protecting drug cartels. “The drug trade has flourished under the BJP’s rule. This bust is a cosmetic exercise to hide their involvement,” he claimed.
Chaudhury alleged that the government is targeting small-time peddlers to create an illusion of action while shielding the real culprits.
BJP Denies Allegations
The BJP has strongly refuted the accusations. Tripura’s Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, dismissed the claims as politically motivated. “The BJP is committed to a drug-free Tripura. The recent operation reflects our determination,” he stated.
Challenges in Tackling Drug Trafficking
Tripura’s porous border with Bangladesh makes it a key transit point for narcotics entering India. Despite numerous crackdowns, the drug trade persists, raising concerns about the effectiveness of anti-narcotics measures.
Civil society groups have called for a more comprehensive approach. “The government must address root causes like unemployment and lack of education,” said Rina Das, a social activist in Agartala.
